I’m an epidemiologist, which means I study how diseases and health conditions affect people. My work focuses on two main areas. First, I design and analyze clinical trials. These are carefully planned studies that test new treatments, medicines, or health programs to see if they are safe and effective. Clinical trials are often done in controlled settings to give us a clear picture of whether an intervention works under ideal conditions.
The second part of my work looks at how these treatments or programs perform in the real world. This is important because something that works well in a clinical trial might not work the same way when people use it in everyday life. I use a set of methods called causal inference to analyze real-world data from hospitals, clinics, and communities. This helps me figure out whether an intervention is truly making a difference in people’s health outside of the trial environment.
In simple terms, I help find out not only what treatments and programs can work but also whether they actually do work in real-life settings. My goal is to provide reliable information that helps doctors, health systems, and policymakers make better decisions to improve people’s health.

My Typical Day
A typical day in my role involves working with colleagues to design studies and develop clear research questions. This process includes writing analytical plans, preparing study protocols, and creating presentations to share findings or explain upcoming projects. I also spend part of each day working directly with data, using R statistical software to write code, analyze datasets, and interpret results that help answer important health research questions.

In my day-to-day work as an epidemiologist, I spend a lot of time thinking about how to answer important health questions. This often starts with brainstorming sessions with my colleagues, where we discuss ideas for new studies and decide which research questions are most important to focus on. Once we have a clear idea of what we want to study, I help write detailed plans that explain how we will collect and analyze the data. These plans are important because they guide the entire research process and ensure that the results we produce are reliable and meaningful.
I also spend time preparing presentations, either to share our findings with other researchers or to explain our plans to people who might be interested in supporting or participating in the study. Communicating clearly is a big part of my job, because good research only makes a difference if others can understand and use the results.
One part of my day that almost never changes is working with data. I use a computer program called R, which helps me write code to organize and analyze large amounts of health information. This could involve anything from summarizing simple numbers to running complex models that help us understand whether a treatment or health program is truly effective. In short, my work involves a mix of planning, teamwork, communication, and hands-on data analysis, all aimed at finding answers that can improve people’s health.

Who is an epidemiologist? They’re like detectives, but instead of chasing thieves, they chase diseases to find out who started them, how they’re spreading, and how to stop them. (So basically... when people start coughing in school, the epidemiologist is the one asking, “Who started this?”)... So call us (epidemiologists) your disease detectives...
