No, scientists come from all walks of life. But science is a great equalizer, because both poor and rich kids can study side by side and through education, achieve equal status. So yes, many scientists may have come from a poor background and education makes it possible for them to join this career. Remember, sometimes children of the rich are not interested in working hard in school or do not want to do the difficult subjects involved in science, and so they have an easy life because their parents can afford for them luxuries. This can result in fewer rich kids getting into science, and those scientists from poor backgrounds being more.
