0 Question: How did they come up with the HIV/AIDS name? Keywords: HIV Asked by cash22seg on 22 Jul 2025.
Brayan Odeka answered on 22 Jul 2025:
Scientists discovered the virus in the early 1980s and gave it this name so doctors everywhere could understand what it does to the body.
The name HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It was given this name because the virus attacks the human immune system, making it weak.
AIDS Acquired” means you get it (you’re not born with it).
“Immunodeficiency” means your immune system becomes weak.
“Syndrome” means it causes many health problems together.
