Before entering the placenta, maternal blood is oxygen-rich and nutrient-rich, carrying waste products from the mother’s body. After passing through the placenta, the maternal blood is depleted of oxygen and nutrients, and it carries waste products from the fetus. Essentially, the placenta acts as a filter and exchange point, transferring oxygen and nutrients to the fetus while removing waste products from the fetal circulation.
