The oldest car company still in operation today is Peugeot, founded in 1810. While they didn’t start producing automobiles until much later, their overall company history makes them the longest-running car manufacturer. However, Benz & Cie., founded by Karl Benz in 1883, was the first company to focus solely on gasoline-powered automobiles. Benz’s Patent-Motorwagen, patented in 1886, is widely recognized as the first practical gasoline-powered automobile.
